Berlin Wall returns, in human form

November 7, 2009

Kimberly Bradley in the NYT‘s Globespotters:

At 8:27 p.m. on Nov. 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall was breached, parting the Iron Curtain to the joy of both East Berliners and the rest of the world.

Twenty years later, the British artist and curator Martin Butler is hoping to the put the wall back up.

Temporarily, that is, and using bodies rather than concrete and barbed wire. Mr. Butler’s project, “Mauer Mob 2009: Recreating the Berlin Wall,” intends to “reconstruct” the wall with a human chain. The Mauer Mob (Mauer means “wall” in German) idea is a kind of supersized flash mob: from 8:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 9, Mr. Butler hopes that thousands of people will descend on the wall’s former route in a kind of temporary monument.
